Engineering & Design
- Define a design problem using stated criteria and constraints for the first time — e.g., a container that must hold water and be easy to empty (the "Design a Rain Catcher" pre/post challenge).
- Build a solution from the Smart Machines Kit's coded blocks, motors, and sensors that meets the stated criteria.
- Test a built solution against its criteria and identify one needed improvement.
- Work within the level's first defined 4-role team structure (Leader, Material Manager, Reporter, Testing Supervisor) to complete a build.
Science
- Describe a basic earth process relevant to a build, such as where rainwater comes from and how it can be collected and reused (NGSS Earth's Place in the Universe; Cambridge Science Earth & Space).
- Connect a build to an introductory physical-science (waves) or life-science (heredity) idea encountered this year (NGSS PS4 Waves; LS1/LS3 Heredity).
- Apply Thinking & Working Scientifically skills — observing, predicting, testing — while building and testing a device (Cambridge Science Stage 1, continuing).
- Connect a build to a real-world scenario as an example of science in context (Cambridge Science — Science in Context).
Mathematics
- Count, compare, and combine quantities of parts used in a build (Cambridge Primary Number; Common Core Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten).
- Identify and use simple 2D/3D shapes and spatial relationships in a design (Cambridge Primary Geometry; Common Core Geometry).
- Collect and represent simple data from testing, such as how much water a container holds (Cambridge Primary Statistics; Common Core Measurement & Data).
Computing & Coding
- Use simple coded action blocks to sequence and trigger motor and sensor behavior on a physical device — a tangible introduction to programmed control ahead of visual/text coding.
- Apply basic if-this-then-that logic in a physical build (e.g., a trigger causes a motor to move).
Take on and fulfill a defined team role — Leader, Material Manager, Reporter, or Testing Supervisor — while collaborating, communicating, and resolving conflict within a build team.
Name a career connected to a completed design (e.g., Environmental Engineer).
Name a sustainability goal connected to a completed design (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Project 1: Design a Bridge
The first project of the level, as it appears in the guidebook. The full workbook is in the reader below where published.
Roads go through places where elephants live. Sometimes elephants can get hurt when they cross the road. Your team will help by building a bridge so elephants can cross the road safely. The problem, as printed in the workbook.
